アメリカでみかんは「Satsuma」と呼ばれている

職場で同僚から「Yohei、Satsumaあげるよ」と呼ばれて、みかんを手渡されました。
いきなり薩摩という単語を聞いて驚いて「なんでみかんのこと薩摩って呼んだの？」としつこく聞いてしまい、怪訝な顔をされました。同僚は Satsuma Mandarin という種類の果物があるとしか認識していないらしく気になって調べてみました。

みかんで有名な品種である「温州みかん」の英語ページを見ると、アメリカで温州みかんが Satsuma と呼ばれるようになった歴史が書いてあります。まさかこんな歴史があったとは知りませんでした。

1876年、明治時代にアメリカ大使館職員の家族が九州の薩摩からアメリカへみかんを持ち込み、19世紀後半にアメリカではみかんが一般的になったそうです。温州みかん自体は日本原産ではないそうですが、九州の薩摩から持ち込まれたため「Satsuma」と呼ばれるようになったそうです。なお、アラバマ・フロリダ・テキサス・ルイジアナなどにある温州みかんの栽培に成功した土地は「Satsuma」と呼ばれているそうです。

The fruit became much more common in the United States starting in the late 19th century. In 1876 during the Meiji period, satsumas were brought to the United States from the Satsuma Province in Kyūshū, Japan by a spouse of a member of the U.S. Embassy. While the species originates from Japan, it does not originate from the Satsuma Province in particular. The towns of Satsuma, Alabama; Satsuma, Florida; Satsuma, Texas; and Satsuma, Louisiana were named after this fruit.

みかんがこんなワールドワイドな果物だったなんて。。世の中、知らないことだらけですね。
